A computational model of time perception

 

Abstract.

Time perception in the range of seconds to hours, called interval timing, is critical for planning actions, estimating rates of dynamic processes, and decision making. The distributed neural networks involved in time perception include the frontal cortex for decision, motor cortex for actions, basal ganglia for comparison of different durations, hippocampus for temporal and spatial memories, and a series of neurotransmitters that modulate their activity. We performed experiments on rats and mice and developed a computational model that mimics the activity of known cortical areas involved in interval timing. Our model produces accurate and scalar timing, i.e., the error on time estimation linearly increases with the to-be-timed duration.

Mihaela GIRTAN received her Ph.D degree in Condensed Matter Physics in 2000 at Al.I. Cuza University of Iasi. She is currently Associate Professor of Materials Science at the University of Angers and since 2006 the head of the group Thin films for photovoltaic applications at Photonics Laboratory, Angers. The research interests of Mihaela Girtan cover several aspects of thin films, physical and chemical deposition methods, solar cell technology and optoelectronic devices, including charge transport in oxides and conducting polymers, electrical conductivity and photoconductivity measurements, organic and hybrid solar cells, organic transistors, transparent conducting thin films, structural, morphological, electrical and optical properties of thin films, plasmonics, transport phenomena in low dimensional structures.

 

Mihaela Girtan is the author of the book Future Solar Energy Devices. (Springer 2018), co-author of other two book and author and coauthor of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals in materials science, photonics, photovoltaics and energy area, (H=26). She has delivered more than 150 lectures in national/international meetings. She has coordinated several national and international research projects, she is associate member of: the Academy of Science - Angers, member of different scientific societies, outstanding reviewer of Thin Solid Films, member and chairperson of different international conferences, EU evaluator expert, member of different expertise and jury committees.

cercetator german de origine romana, nascut la Arad, se numara printre cei trei laureati

ai Premiului NOBEL pentru CHIMIE 2014.

·         Stefan W. Hell a fost premiat impreuna cu americanii Eric Betzig si William E. Moerner pentru "dezvoltarea microscopiei cu fluorescenta de super-rezolutie", conform anunțului făcut miercuri 8 octombrie 2014, la Stockholm, de catre Staffan Normark, secretar permanent al Academiei Regale de Științe din Suedia.

·         Prof. Stefan W. Hell este membru de onoare al Academiei Romane si

Doctor Honoris Causa al Universitatii "Politehnica" din Bucuresti.
